It had really been months since I have written a new post for my blog. Even if I could provide you more reasons, my first priority would be ‘my laziness’. Though I had time to read other blogs, to surf etc… I didn’t have the patience to write one. And once again it was Vimal’s posts, which inspired me to start again. :-) Wanted to write one, long before but since was held up in my best friend’s marriage, was unable to. This time it’s about Unnai Pol Oruvan and my comments on the film.                                                                            Kamal

Kamal Haasan’s ‘Unnai Pol Oruvan’(UPO), a remake of Bollywood hit ‘A Wednesday’, is one of the most awaited movie of this season with two of South India’s best actors. UPO does complete justice to the original with only an extra character. The plot of the movie revolves around an individual’s anger against terrorism and the steps he takes to express it. The movie concludes with the message that Terrorism is the only answer for Terrorism. It is an honest outburst of anger from a common man against mass killing in the name of Jihaad. The objective of Kamals character (he doesn’t have a name in the movie) gets revealed only in the second half until then the audience mind rolls with curiosity what and why is he plotting against the police and the public.

Mohan LalMohan Lal plays ICR Naadar, the role of the Chennai city Commissioner. The applause among the audience in the theatre shows how much they enjoy watching his character and empathize the mess a commissioner goes through from the hands of Power, Politics and Public. The Music and BGM is by Shruthi Haasan and is praiseworthy. A tiger’s cub got to be tiger and yes she leaps 16 feet with her debut movie itself.

UPO takes away the usual screenplay and clichés of Tamil cinema and is a totally new genre. Infact the hero of the film is seen seated on a chair throughout the film but still pulls the audience to the edge of the seat. The credit goes to the Debutant Director Chakri Toleti. He deserves a pat on his shoulder for setting the story straight forward and not moving out to commercial elements. UPO is a movie to sensitize people against the injustice to the Public in the name of terrorism.

UPO is a must watch experience; an excellent story well told. And yes, it makes you think….in a new way! But no wonder, if there is a change after this.Loads of questions pondered my mind as I came out of the theatre…

If Kamal’s role in the film comes true in reality… what will happen…?

Why is the government not taking any measures after films like this?

Why are the rules and regulations of the Indian government not changing? Why isn’t the punishment harsh enough?

I hope everyone remembers a mail thread about a few Kamal’s film.. Whatever he does or predicts in his film, it happens in our real life after a few years… so can we expect something like that after UPO. Sounds quirky, but I would prefer to do that role if I didn’t have any commitments or a family.

It’s really hard in Kollywood to see people applauding a film once it ends. After a long time I saw the whole theatre giving a standing ovation for Vennila Kabadi Kulu(VKK). The 1st time it was for a movie directed by Venkat Prabhu called Saroja. The recent films being not so good, people had no way other than just to watch all the films which are released in the theatres near by.

VKK enriches when it comes to a new feel but when it comes to narration and theme, it reminds us of the previous old films with the same theme. The same old village story where a boy and girl looking at each other, falling in love and a beautiful melody along with the film reminds us  the recent past mega hit Subramaniapuram.

But guess what, the film, really is a good one when compared to the latest Pongal Releases ‘Villu’ and ‘ Padikadhavan’. Worth watching it.

As such, along with my friend I went to VKK, playing in a theatre near my house, with no expectations. The director of the film Susindhran bounded by his own life experiences of his father blends it with VKK. Does his spell work magic abundantly on the screens? Of course, it does. But towards the end, the narration turns flimsy leading to an unconvincing climax. For sure, many audiences would accept my point of view.

It’s all about a few village guys teaming up together for ‘VKK’ where they love playing Kabadi ( one such sport played in villages) always. Their passion to the game does not make them winners but as losers always. The whole film is depicted towards a inter-district Kabadi match , with a help of their hometown Kabadi Coach played by Kishore ,they enter the game and win laurels. Once they win the final, I can see people departing the theatre but here you come to see the director’s touch adopting the style of director Bala and Aamir. All throughout the film we see a beautiful story with good romance , interesting game , realistic comedy scenes but again, the climax could have ended on a much happier note.

The debutante Vishnu (Maari) is one bright player among the team but you don’t see him playing often.(A good reality by the director). You also have to shower praises the heroine Saranya who has done well in the film. Although she has appeared in lots of films before this,VKK really adds more value to her career. The rest of the cast have brilliantly portrayed their role giving the audience a satisfying experience.

The music is scored by Selvaganesh with a melodious song and excellent BGMs. Realistic approach makes the audience to speak about the film again and again. On the whole VKK is a good entertainer for the season or to say for the year to start with.

‘Strength of thousand elephants’ is the meaning of the latest Surya starrer film Vaaranam Aayiram. I don’t understand why such a name was given to the film but the director has depicted a niche movie paying a tribute to his dad who passed away last year.

Gautham Vasudev Menon, director of the most awaited movie of the year, is one of the best we have in the Industry today. The entire revolves around the lead cast – Surya (as son and father), Sameera Reddy, Simran and Divya. The songs are really good not only to hear but the cinematography is awesome. The first half of the film is a real entertainer but the second half lags. No wonder Gautham’s is long as it runs more than 3 hours.

The film starts with the older Surya lying in his deathbed and this is informed to his son (Surya again) who is an army officer on a special mission. After that the viewer is subjected to the kind of relationship between the father and the son in a flashback mode. The son depends more on his father (Surya) than his mother (Simran) and his father’s actions influence him, motivating words and mannerisms.

Surya and SameeraSoon after his schooling, the son joins a college and goes away from home. The college here shown is Mookambikai College of Engineering in Trichy where Gautham did his under graduation. The younger Surya sees a new life altogether, turns into a playful guy over there at the same time he’s still daddy’s son. After he finishes his course and on the way back home, he meets Sameera Reddy in the train and falls in love with her. The first half then takes you through their love story and what happens after that.

Gautham’s screenplay picturizing the father son bonding, the romance scenes in San Francisco and his actions scenes are interesting but the second half of the film really drags to the core that the audience starts muttering in between. The director has now taken care of this by editing a few portions in the second half to make it shorter.                Surya and Divya

Apart from that, the songs from Harris are really good and seem to be rocking everywhere. Guess the last Harris – Gautham Combo has turned to be a hit. The cameraman Ratanavel has given a good look and richness to the film. Surya’s make-ups as an old man and his six-pack is good. Simran seems to be too old nowadays, Sameera the hot chick is eye catching and Divya has played a decent role.

An emotional, slow film needs a lot of patience especially in the second half but it’s worth watching for its songs and for Surya.

Rating 3 / 5.

Thala Rocks!

Thala Rocks!

Aegan a Tamil film, directed by the debutant director Raju Sundaram casts Ajith as the lead role, Nayanthara, Nassar, Nawdeep and Piaa.

When I decide to go for a movie, my basic expectation would be to watch one that has a proper mix of Action, Romance, Comedy and melodrama. It should be fine tuned and edited in such a way that the fans of the hero or public doesn’t move out of the movie hall. I was all excited when Thala’s (that’s what Ajith is commonly referred as) movie Aegan released, that too for Diwali. The first half of the movie went well with a few laughable comedies but the second half was really damn slow. I also noticed a few people going out of the theatres whenever there was a song, something that is very rare these days.

The mass image of Ajith has been taken care in his introduction scene where he is shown as a cop in a foreign country. Considering comedy as the main theme of the film, all the characters in the film try to gimmick the audience by their so called comedy but most of them fail to bring even a smile.

The whole plot is directly lifted from Shah Rukh Khan’s “Main Hoon Na”. The story goes as such, A Cop Siva (Ajith Kumar) as a CB-CID officer is assigned the mission for finding and then arresting a one time gangster Ram Prasad (Devan) and through him get to another gangster, John Chinnappa (Suman). Karthikeyan (Nasser), commissioner and also the father of Siva gets him admitted in St. John’s College as a student, where Ram Prasads daughter,Pooja (Piaa) is studying. Siva begins to like his new life and starts finding a new side to himself. In the meanwhile, he also finds his love in professor Mallika (Nayanthara). There is also a parallel love story between Pooja and Naren (Navdeep). The rest of the movie shows how he wins his love and also how he completes his mission to nab the gangsters.

Ajith has did a perfect role as a serious police officer (in the early scenes of film) and a jolly going guy throughout the film . He offers something new not just for Thala fans, but for the entire audiences. Finaly he enthralls all his fans with his cuts and breaks in dance. His comedy scenes are excellent and his few scenes with Jayaram and Haneefa are humorous ones. A good one is when Ajith sings ‘Unnai Partha Pinbu Naan’ (his original song from Kadhal Mannan), they are best laughter parts. The comedy scenes worked out by Jayaram and Haneefa are not enjoyable apart from one or two. Even the villan Suman and his assistants try to mix the comedy role and miss out the agressiveness one should have as a Villian. Suhasini and Navdeep have very little to do when compared to the original version of the movie.

The music director of the film is Yuvan Shankar Raja. The film has 5 songs out of which 2 songs are already a hit. Editing is done by V.T Vijayan stunts by Siva and the costume designing by Anu Vardhan.

Apart from all these there is nothing much to say about the film. I still wonder why certain characters have been added to the film. But still the die hard fans of Thala keep shouting around that the film is a super duper hit and that there next film would be better than this one.

Ajith gets all the credentials followed by Nasser, Navdeep and Piaa and then comes the sexy     Nayanthara. An average movie where a viewer would not be disappointed if he doesn’t expect much.
